WADE IN THE WATER is a two Act play that tells the story of slave woman, ONA, and her son, OREE, as well other members of the plantation culture, such as MA PUNK and her lover, DELLA/THANDIWE. In the play, OREE’s spirit returns from the dead seeking revenge over his lynching by CAPT’N JACK PARSONS, his slave owner and half-brother. It is his mother, ONA who is a midwife/medicine woman, that he beseeches to revenge him through the murder of CAPT’N JACK’s soon to be birthed son. In the end, ONA must decide if she is in fact a life-bringer or a life-taker.
